The Number Crunch: Yukon Blonde’s Tiger Talk Pounces To #1

Yukon Blonde's stellar album, Tiger Talk arrives at #1 for the week of April 30, 2012

Yukon Blonde's stellar album, Tiger Talk arrives at #1 for the week of April 30, 2012

There’s a contest brewing on the Canadian campus chart currently. This is the first three week stretch in 2012 when three different albums have held the #1 album slot in consecutive weeks. After a long stretch of single album dominance, Yukon Blonde’s Tiger Talk jumps from the runner-up position to become the #1 album for the week of April 30, 2012.

Last week’s chart topper, Zeus’ Busting Visions falls back to #2 followed by Grimes‘ Visions which held the #1 album spot for a total of six of its 13 weeks on the chart. Visions is the Golden chart holder as the longest-serving album on this week’s top 50.

Great Lake Swimmers’ New Wild Everywhere slides up a position to #5 followed by this week’s Chart Bullet, Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society which rockets up this week’s chart an amazing 41 places, the biggest jump on this weekly chart in over two years. The Shins’ Port Of Morrow slides down two places to #6 while last week’s Chart Sizzler; Eight An Half’s self-titled album remains at #7.

While Esperanza Spalding’s rise is quite impressive, two other brand new releases, both in their sophomore week on this chart jump more than 20 places to land in the top ten. 2 Alabama Shakes’ Boys & Girls moves 24 positions to land at #8 and Patrick Watson‘s Adventures In Your Own Backyard rises 25 spots to hit #9. Dr. John’s Locked Down is another sophomore release hitting the top ten, moving six places to sit at #10 this week.

In honour of the surprise longshot win of I’ll Have Another at the 2012 Kentucky Derby, this week’s Chart Sizzler album is a massive upset. Soundway Records latest release, The FunkeesDancing Time: The Best Of Nigeria’s Afro Rock Exponents 1973-77 enters the chart at #15 this week Les Momies de Palerme’s Brulez Ce Coeur is this week’s runner-up for the Chart Sizzler debuting at #20 while Amadou And Mariam’s Folila arrives at #27, the third-highest new entry this week.

catl’s Soon This Will All Be Gone returns to the top 50 this week after a month’s absence re-entering at #23. Other notable re-entries this week include Lijadu Sisters’ Mother Africa reappearing at #29 and Bronx Cheerleader’s Real Punks Don’t Sing About Girls returning at #32. Mother Africa last appeared April 9 and Real Punks Don’t Sing About Girls hovered in the low 40s for two consecutive weeks ending April 2.

Lastly, John K. Samson’s Provincial falls two places to #50 this week to total 13 weeks matching Visions weekly total.

The Number Crunch: Zeus’ Busting Visions Finally Tops The Chart

Zeus' Busting Visions is the #1 album on the Canadian Campus Chart

Zeus' Busting Visions is the #1 album on the Canadian Campus Chart

After the sustained dominance of one album at the top of the Canadian Campus Chart, we may be entering a time of relative parity among a few of the most popular of campus radio performers. This week, ZeusBusting Visions surprised the pundits, rebounding with a solid four place jump to capture the #1 album position for the week of April 23, 2012. This improbable victory seems to reflect the recent NHL playoff victories by Los Angeles Kings and Washington Capitals. This win ends Grimes’ Visions run at the top of the chart.

Yukon Blonde’s stellar new album, Tiger Talk holds on to the #2 for another week followed by the aforementioned Visions which falls a deuce to #3. The Shins’ long-awaited new disc, Port Of Morrow, jumps four places to #4 followed by Great Lake Swimmers’ New Wild Everywhere sliding up a spot to #5.

Said The Whale’s Little Mountain rises eight places to #6 with the Chart Sizzler Award winner entering at an impressive #7. The highest debut this week goes to the self-titled album from Eight And A Half garnering a #1 ranking at CJSW (Calgary) and #6 at CFBU (Brock).

Andrew Bird’s Break It Yourself falls four places to #8 with Plants And Animals’ The End Of That slipping two positions to #9 and TOPS’ Tender Opposites dropping a single place to #10.

There are a couple of other high-flying new entries arriving in the top 20 this week. Cold Warps’ Cold Warps/Endless Bummer EPs debuts at #13 while Dr. John’s Locked Down arrives at #16.

Other notable new entries include La Sera’s Sees The Light at #27, Moonface With Sinai’s Heartbreaking Bravery at #31 and Alabama Shakes’ Boys & Girls debuting at #32.

The Number Crunch: 5 Weeks For Grimes & Yukon Blonde Top Debut

Yukon Blonde's new album is called Tiger Talk

Yukon Blonde's Tiger Talk is the highest debut this week entering at #8.

It’s been an amazing run for Grimes on the Canadian Campus Chart. The Vancouver performance-art ensemble has remained in the #1 position for a fifth consecutive week  for the week of April 9, 2012 and this makes it the longest-running  debut album at #1. Grimes did a split release with d’Eon back in 2010, but Visions is Grimes first full-length album.

ZeusBusting Visions is the hard-luck loser. For the third consecutive week,  Zeus has not been able to bust Visions out of the top spot remaining again at #2. This may also be the first time two albums with the almost the same name have been #1 & #2 for three straight weeks.

The Ketamines’ Spaced Out rises two spots to #3 pushing Plants and Animals’ The End Of That down a place to #4 while Andrew Bird’s Break It Yourself rises two spots to #5 as the highest non-Canadian album on this week’s top 50.  Said The Whale’s Little Mountain drops t=down a couple of positions to #6 followed by The Men’s Open Your Heart impressive jump of nine places landing at #7.

We don’t need to look too far down the chart to find this week’s highest new entry. The Chart Sizzler Award goes to Yukon Blonde’s Tiger Talk arriving at #8 this week. Tiger Talk appeared on 17 individual charts this week including six top ten finishes (#2 at CIUT and CKLU; #3 at CHMR and CKDU;  #5 at CKUW and #10 at CFCR).

Caetano Veloso & David Byrne’s Live At Carnegie Hall arrives at #21, the second-highest new entry this week while Marie-Pierre Arthur’s Aux Alentours  enters at #25 beating out Great lake Swimmers’  New Wild Everywhere debuting at #26. Other new entries include Joel Plasket Emergency’s Scrappy Happiness at #35, Georgia Anne Muldrow’s Seeds at #44 and Tom Jones’ new single, Jezebel/Evil at #46.

Another surprise this week is the return of Damien Jurado’s Maraqopa re-entering the chart at #15 after a three week absence. Maraqopa led a larger than normal number of re-entries, seven in total with Nardwuar + The Evaporators Present Busy Doing Nothing! returning at #18.
